We Are the Restoration Team That Works for You | SERVPRO® of Central Honolulu

8/4/2022 (Permalink)

When it comes to owning a business, every decision you make directly affects you and your family. We are a locally owned and operated SERVPRO location, so we fully understand this unique position. From planning the day-to-day tasks to having a robust emergency plan in place for disasters, it can seem overwhelming to be in charge of so much!

Even though it can be scary to have to plan for disasters, taking the time to prepare before an event can make all the difference.

If you are a business owner in the Honolulu area, chances are that you live close by as well. If a storm system comes through, you are at risk of suffering damages to both places! Two restoration projects at one time would not be fun at all, but we have your back, no matter what you are facing.

Start by creating an emergency plan for both your home and your business property that has different scenarios laid out for the different weather or disaster emergencies that we are vulnerable to here in Hawaii.

In order to learn what kinds of threats to prepare for, the American Red Cross has developed a great resource that compiles national data and offers suggestions on preparation. We also have a wonderful local website from the Department of Emergency Management that can help you prepare. It even has a section where you can enter your address and it will tell you if you are located in a tsunami evacuation zone!

Why Should You Choose Us?

We have a unique understanding of restoration projects. While damages from disasters are incredibly common in the United States, each situation and recovery process is different.

For example, when water damage occurs, the effects vary greatly. In the United States, more than 14 million homes are in a zone that is vulnerable to flooding every year, but some houses will experience catastrophes while others will weather the storm easily.

This is why our crews are trained to react to each situation as it is presented.

We will answer your phone call 24 hours a day. The most impactful decision you can make when you discover damages is to act quickly. We know that damages don’t just occur during a typical business day, so we make sure we are available whenever you need us.

Water and mold can cause immediate damages and the longer you wait to address any issues, the larger your problem becomes. Failure to act can actually cause your home’s internal structures to weaken.

We can help with more than just your restoration project. Our first goal is to make sure we start your restoration project in a timely manner, but we also want to help with every aspect of the process.

We can help you pack up your things into boxes while your home is being worked on and we will discuss your insurance claim with your agency to make sure you are getting the most out of the process.

It doesn’t matter what kind of disaster or the scale of your damages, we are here for you at SERVPRO of Central Honolulu. Our team of highly skilled professionals have the proper tools and equipment to help get your property, and your life, back to normal as quickly as we possibly can.

When you suffer damage to your home or business, it’s important that you know who to call! Contact us today to get restoration started faster.

Commercial Flood Plan for your Business

7/29/2022 (Permalink)

Downtown Honolulu A recent Hawaii storm causes flood damage

In a commercial business of any size, floods are in the top two most common disasters experienced across the U.S. Even with a detailed emergency plan, most businesses remain unprepared. Statistics show, the number of businesses that close permanently in response to a disaster, is a staggering one to one. Flood plans, like your fire evacuation preparedness plan, are key not only to mitigating the very real property and health risks of common flood-related disaster, but key to your future success.

The Most Basic Flood Evacuation Plan Should Include:

  • The capacity for quick response.
With personnel that have specific task and responsibilities in times of emergency.
  • A disaster supply kit.
Including emergency and medical supplies, as well as enough food and water to last at least 72 hours. Preparedness training at work should likewise instruct employees on preparing their own mobile kit, for preparation to shelter-in-place for 24 hours in the event of emergency.
  • Plan development and training.
All employees should know what to do in an emergency, including disaster-specific evacuation and emergency response procedures. Assign specific employees (and backup personnel) to key tasks, such as emergency shut-down of equipment and power sources and performing a roll-call. Exercises and drills to cement skills and uncover potential issues should be regularly performed, and flood and other emergency action plans reviewed and updated regularly. Clearly post and provide employees with paper copies of plans.
  • Emergency contact information.
Ensure all employees have a list of key telephone numbers. Blank business cards sheets from the local office supply are a convenient, easy way to provide a wallet-size list. These lists should be distributed quarterly.
  • Additional guidance.
This is not an all-inclusive list, SERVPRO of Central Honolulu can prepare an inspection of your commercial property and can put a digital Emergency Readiness Plan together free of charge.

mold and bacteria proliferation increase with each hour left unaddressed. Quick remediation, proper safety gear and on-site sanitary and medical provisions are essential to treating clean-up related injury.

Understanding Backyard Fire Hazards | SERVPRO® of Central Honolulu

7/21/2022 (Permalink)

a close up view of a bright campfire burning at night If you have experienced fire or smoke damage, contact SERVPRO of Central Honolulu.

There is really nothing better than making memories with your family around your home in your own backyard. Grilling, s’mores and telling stories in the dark can make long-lasting family memories.

We use fire often in these types of activities. From campfires, meals, pest control or debris removal, all of these activities carry their own set of dangers when it comes to fire safety. In fact, the National Park Service believes that nearly 85% of wildfires are started by humans.

Knowing this doesn’t mean you can’t light up your tiki torches, roast marshmallows or grill up the perfect tuna. It simply should make you aware of the dangers and allow you to implement some backyard fire safety practices to minimize your risk.

Recreational Fire Danger

Any time there is open flame, there is risk, especially when it comes to grills, campfires and those portable fire pits. On average, grills start 8,800 home fires, mostly due to user neglect or error.

Check on your tanks and gas lines for any leaks or cracks before starting your grill, and always designate someone to be responsible for the flames.

If you are building a bonfire, choose a safe location away from homes, outbuildings and vehicles. Stick to only matches or lighters to get your flame started, and use only wood when your fire is established.

Those portable fire pits are a backyard favorite nowadays, and these pits should be treated with the same care as a ground fire. Never place it on a wooden deck or an area that has an overhang.

Once your fire is started, it can be tempting to feed construction or household waste into it. However, you should only burn approved firewood.

Even though the 4th of July is over for the year, make sure you are following the rules regarding fireworks in Honolulu. Only firecrackers and other ground, non-explosive fireworks are allowed on the island.

Additional Outdoor Fire Dangers

It is important to remember that the burning regulations in Hawaii and Honolulu are very specific. Most burning requires a permit, and burning yard waste is not allowed.

If you have any gas cans in your shed or garage, make it a priority to ensure they are stored properly and that only gas is in them. Gas should only be used as fuel for your equipment and should never be used as a fire accelerant.

Before you light a fire for dinner, make sure you are checking local weather conditions to verify that it is not too windy or dry. If the conditions are not ideal, skip the flames and plan it for another day.

We hope you never experience fire damage, but if you do, call us at SERVPRO of Central Honolulu. Our trained technicians know how to handle every aspect of fire damage, and we strive to restore as much of your property as quickly as possible.

Burn safely outdoors. And save some chocolate for us! If you have experienced fire or smoke damage, contact us today to get restoration started faster.

The Importance of Weather Alerts | SERVPRO® of Central Honolulu

7/12/2022 (Permalink)

"a red and white severe weather alert sign" If you suspect any damage to your home from a recent storm, call SERVPRO of Central Honolulu.

Severe weather comes in many different forms across the United States. In fact, the United States is so unique with different weather patterns that there are 42 different kinds of weather alerts that correspond to all of the possible scenarios.

When warnings or alerts for those weather systems are issued in Honolulu, it is important that you understand how to interpret them in order to stay safe.

Thankfully, we don’t experience every single weather scenario possible (and we are especially thankful for the lack of blizzard warnings here). But we do need to understand the alerts that affect us here in Hawaii.

<h4and-alerts">Forecasting and Alerts

Have you ever been curious about how an alert is issued in the first place? Forecasting is an educated prediction, so how do forecasters feel confident about issuing alerts based on predictions? They actually use a variety of different models and data points in order to be as accurate as possible when it comes to the severity, length and location of a given weather system.

The National Weather Service is the major organization that oversees the weather forecasting for the entire nation. That’s a lot of responsibility!

In order to keep every forecast and alert as accurate as possible, the NWS is broken down into six regional locations around the country and sub-locations even closer to home. The Pacific Region that oversees our area is actually located right in Honolulu. We are the only state in the country that is under the Pacific Region’s responsibility.

The staff at the Pacific office use satellite data, sensors, and solar and seismic activity meters to create their forecasts. While they understand that weather can sometimes be unpredictable, their goal is to be as precise as possible.

<h4the-difference-watch-vs-warning">Knowing the Difference: Watch vs. Warning

Being an island state, it is imperative that we all understand the difference between watches and warnings. Weather can change in an instant, so it is important to know the distinction between these two alerts.

A lot of our weather threats are water-based, like tropical storms, cyclones, flash flooding or tsunamis. Most of our state is at risk to quickly changing weather in regard to the ocean, so it is important to know how each of these weather situations would impact you and your home.

When a watch is issued, you must begin preparing for the incoming weather with the understanding that it has the potential to turn severe. Update your emergency kit and keep an eye on the sky.

When a warning is issued or replaces a watch, it is time to head for shelter immediately. A warning means that the incoming weather has been proven to produce dangerous qualities.

<h4your-home">Prepping Your Home

The most important focus during severe weather is to keep yourself and your family safe. However, if you have enough time ahead of the storm, you can take a few preventive measures around your home that will help reduce the risk of damage to your house.

Clearing your gutters and securing your outdoor furniture are two easy tasks you can do to help minimize the risk of structural damage and water damage to your home. It is also a great idea to repack your emergency kit and place that in your safe shelter location.

When the threat of severe weather has passed, do an inspection of your home and property, take photos of any damages you find, and call us at SERVPRO® of Central Honolulu if you need help with the cleanup or repair process. We respond to all inquiries quickly, and we will begin your restoration as soon as we can.

The more you understand about Honolulu’s weather, the safer you can keep your family. Taking the time to understand the different alerts and how to respond to them is a great way to stay prepared in advance of the incoming severe weather and hurricane season.

Businesses have been a cornerstone of our country since its conception. Each and every person in our country utilizes businesses in some form or fashion, either through using a business’ services or products or working as an employee.

Being a business owner entails a slew of duties on a daily basis, even without the added stress of an unforeseeable calamity. But when disaster strikes, it may be catastrophic to a business’s finances.

According to The National Center for Environmental Information, storm damages have exceeded $2.195 trillion in the United States since 1980, exhibiting just how pricey storm damages can get.

Honolulu sees a number of different weather-related disasters due to our island location. The Kona low storms are one recent example of this, which resulted in major flooding and damages in central Honolulu.

Because of how common storms are to our area, it is essential to know the most common types of damages and how to prevent them in order to protect your business from harm.

<h2damage">Water Damage

Excess water or moisture is a major threat to businesses around the country, especially in Hawaii. Water damage can occur naturally or as a result of a simple appliance failure, and both types of water damage can wreak havoc on commercial property.

Flooding is among the most significant of threats. Flooding from the exterior, such as flash floods or overflowing rivers, may seep past the doors and into your building’s foundation. If you have enough space surrounding your business, consider employing landscaping to deflect water away from it as a preventive measure.

Leaks inside the building can also cause water damage that lasts for a long time. It’s critical to check for leaks in your plumbing and for warping or discoloration in your walls and floors. Taking these precautions on a regular basis will help you stay ahead of the damage and avoid pricey repairs.

<h2damage">Storm Damage

Storm-related commercial damage is prevalent, and it can be devastating to a row of businesses, knocking out power and creating damage from loose debris. Commercial roofing and building siding can be effortlessly ripped off by really powerful storms.

Winds can exceed 85 miles per hour in the average storm. Storms of this magnitude are capable of uprooting trees, falling walls and toppling big vehicles.

Installing storm-protective window covers and a new roof for your business will limit the extent of storm damage, but these precautions can be costly.

On the plus side, taking preventive actions like routinely inspecting your structure and checking the seals on your windows and doors will save you money and help you avoid additional disasters. Before a storm hits, it’s also a good idea to clear your land of any potential hazards that could uproot and damage things around you.

<h2who-to-call">Know Who to Call

Commercial damage can take many different forms, with water and storm damage being the most common. As a result of these unfortunate accidents, businesses are sometimes forced to shut down to allow for repairs or perhaps permanently close.

Fortunately, SERVPRO is available around the clock and ready to respond to any emergency you may face. Our certified restoration specialists will work with you to plan and implement the optimal restoration approach that works for your business.

With a Few Simple Steps, You Can Prevent Fires in Your Home | SERVPRO® of Central Honolulu

6/6/2022 (Permalink)

Honolulu Fire Job If your home is damaged in a house fire, SERVPRO of Central Honolulu is here to help. Contact us for any fire restoration needs.

Between 2015 and 2019, 74% of house fires occurred in a home with at least one working smoke alarm present, a hopeful statistic representing the widespread success of fire alert technology in the average home.

Even though smoke detectors continue to be the most effective strategy to avoid fire-related deaths and property damage, there are various other preventive steps you can take that are simple as can be:

Remove Any Clutter

Clutter can easily invade our homes. Unattended loose, flammable items in hallways and storage spaces, such as clothing, spare blankets and other fabrics are especially dangerous when it comes to fire prevention.

If you leave clothes unattended near gas ranges or water heaters, you can easily start a fire. To avoid hazards stepping in the way if you ever need to depart your home quickly, it’s wise to leave open, clean passageways. This will also slow the spread if a fire does occur, leaving fewer flammable materials in its path.

Finally, check for room between furniture, rugs and your wall outlets to ensure they have ample space and are not rubbing together or tangled.

Build a Defense Outside Your Home

There are many ways to prepare the exterior of your home to better defend against home fires. Using intentional landscaping methods, you can clear a path to help firefighters enter your home more easily in case of a fire.

It is recommended to have at least 30 feet of defensible space outside your home at all times, and replace flammable material with more suitable things such as concrete, brick and gravel. Also, make sure to clear any debris that could get in the way.

In Honolulu, brush fires stemming from loose grass and shrubs are the source of a number of fires, so it is especially important to check for these flammable materials gathered around your home.

Plan for Outdoor Access to Water

In the instance that the water located inside of your home is no longer working or accessible, it can be extremely helpful to have access to an outdoor water system.

Consider investing in a sprinkler system, or purchasing extra-long garden hoses that can reach all points on the exterior of the home.

Taking these simple steps can make a big difference in lowering your susceptibility to a fire, and ensuring that you are more prepared if a home fire ever does occur.

We spend so much time in our homes, making memories with those we love and tending to its upkeep. It is essential that we also keep our homes clean and take time to prevent hazards to avoid the chance of a fire.

If you have experienced fire damage or want to learn more about our fire damage restoration services, contact us today. We’re here to act fast, 247.

How to Create a Storm Safety Plan | SERVPRO® of Central Honolulu

5/19/2022 (Permalink)

Hawaii Storm Pic If you discover storm damage to your home or business, reach out to SERVPRO of Central Honolulu right away.

Severe weather can create hazardous circumstances and result in significant damage to houses and infrastructure. Weather-related damages frequently have financial ramifications. The United States spent at least $1 billion on weather-related damages in 2021, demonstrating how costly storm disasters can be.

Here in Honolulu, we are more at risk for water-related natural disasters such as tsunamis, hurricanes and flooding. It is important to know the types of disasters that are more likely to occur in our area to know how to best prepare for incoming storms.

Storms can be dangerous to both your safety and wallet—and while we can’t control the weather, we can learn how to better prepare for storms when they do happen. One way to prepare for bad weather is to have a storm safety plan in place.

Prepare an Emergency Kit

In the event of a storm, emergency kits are vital to have on hand. Water, nonperishable food, a first-aid kit, functional flashlights and backup batteries should all be included in your emergency bag. Ensure that your emergency kit is stored in a location that is easily accessible from your shelter.

Create a Communication Plan

When a storm strikes, having a communication strategy in place for all members of your household or business is critical. In the event of a weather-related emergency, communication plans with emergency phone numbers, marked evacuation routes and shelter information can be useful.

Consider creating a dedicated “safe zone” in your house or office to shelter from bad weather, as well as a check-in system for parties to report when they are safe.

Prepare Your Home, Inside and Out

By taking efforts to prepare your house or company for a storm, you can lessen the risk of avoidable damage. Begin by securing windows and doors and inspecting the exterior of your structure for loose items that could be blown away during the storm.

Next, make sure your roof and gutters are in good functioning order and that there are no leaks. Installing DIY storm shutters to protect against rain and severe winds can also be beneficial.

It is critical to know who to call for assistance in the event that damages occur. SERVPRO of Central Honolulu has your back with a dependable team of professional restoration technicians. We’re available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to restore your home to “Like it never even happened.”

Finally, take time to review your storm safety plan and how it worked for your house or business. Gather any necessary supplies, revise your communication plans and be ready for the next storm.

If you discover storm damage to your home or business, you can count on SERVPRO to handle the restoration. We’re here 247 to spring into action—get in touch with us today.

Water Damage Follows This Timeline

4/20/2022 (Permalink)

Water Damage No matter the damage sustained, SERVPRO of Central Honolulu has the tools and team to help your home return to a normal state quickly.

You may have noticed your bathroom sink leaks every once in a while. No big deal, right? Wrong! You should never underestimate the havoc water can wreak on your home.

The average household leak can waste up to 10,000 gallons of water in a year.

Any water damage your home may be experiencing progresses rapidly, penetrating floors, walls and soft surfaces. The best way to react is to address the issue as soon as possible before it can get worse. Here’s a timeline of how quickly the damage can set in.

The First 24 Hours

Your Central Honolulu home has a one in four chance of encountering flood damage within a 30-year period in a high-risk area. Knowing what to do next is essential.

Immediately after, within the first 24 to 48 hours, certain items will immediately fall victim to water’s disastrous effects.

Upholstered furnishings and wood structures can swell as a result of moisture. Fragile items, such as books and photographs, may become warped beyond repair. This is also when mold first starts to develop, which means it’s vital to take action within this time period.

The experts at SERVPRO of Central Honolulu specialize in restoration, and we want to make sure you save money and your precious keepsakes! Those are the items that can’t be replaced. We will make sure to let you know if there are any items that cannot be saved.

Within the First Week

After the first 24 hours, water damage will progress further and quickly. If excessive moisture is present, mold will spread exponentially. If mold begins to grow, it can even cause structural damage to your home.

Any porous surfaces in your home like wood or walls will begin to show the damage, as they’re compromised by the moisture. Metal surfaces in your home will start corroding as well.

In a Week

It’s never a good idea to let water damage progress this far. Letting the moisture sit for an extended period of time could cause irreversible damage. As time goes on, the costs and efforts to restore the structure will increase significantly, and the risks associated with structural damage are greater.

How SERVPRO Can Help You

Here’s what you need to know about our restoration process: The journey begins with the first call. It’s optimal if you call within the first 24 hours, so we can provide you with the best results possible.

Our service work then begins with a thorough extraction of the water in your home. That way we can prevent the spread of water throughout the structure and reduce drying time.

Next, your home will likely need a full cleaning, including sanitation and deodorization. Lucky for you, our specialists are experts who will come equipped with industry-leading drying equipment to remove the water you can’t see.

Lastly, your home may require construction work to get back to its preloss condition, but we’re prepared to handle anything from minor repairs to rebuilding entire areas of your home.

We can simplify the restoration process by handling both the initial damage mitigation and rebuilding the affected areas. SERVPRO will keep you up to date on every step and have you back in your home or business in no time.

Regardless of the type of water damage sustained, SERVPRO has the tools and teams to help your home or business recover. Contact us 247 when you need a dependable team to help you recover.

4/5/2022 (Permalink)

Flood Floods on Island

When you’re living on an island, it’s difficult to predict when a tidal wave could occur, impacting your home and livelihood. Perhaps, you have recently suffered some sort of flooding in your home.

It’s easy to pass off a little water, considering flooding is the most common natural disaster in the U.S. and its territories. However, you may not have know it claims more lives per year than hurricanes, tornadoes or lighting. Not to mention, flooding can impact anywhere from one home to an entire island.

There are actually several similarities among types of flooding and the causes behind them. The categories of flooding can be broken down into three types: flash floods, river floods and coastal floods.

3 Types of Natural Flooding

Flash floods occur when heavy rain passes or sits over an area and hinders the ground’s ability to contain all the moisture. Excess water runs off and takes garbage cans, cars and more with it.

River floods can happen when there’s too much water for a river’s banks to hold, the water spills over the sides and causes destruction.

Coastal floods happen in areas next to large bodies of water, such as islands. When a storm comes through, it can cause ocean or gulf levels to rise to flood levels.

4 Typical Reasons Behind Natural Flooding

Heavy rainfall. Heavy storms that sit and rest over an area for a long time can cause flash floods or river flooding. Urban areas are more at risk for rain floods, because there’s a lack of soil to soak up all the water.

Oceanic activity. Storm surges, hurricanes and rising tides can cause water levels to rise in waves, which can wreak havoc in coastal communities, such as Honolulu.

Dams and levees failing. The most notable example of this in recent history would be the disastrous levee breaks during 2005’s Hurricane Katrina. Levees and dams fail when cracks occur or excess pressure overtakes the dam’s ability to contain the surge of water behind it.

Snowmelts and ice dams. In other states where heavy snow and prolonged freezing temperatures are common, snow and ice can build up over several months. When they start to melt, it can cause flowing waters, which damage nearby communities. Ice dams or ice jams occurs when ice traveling downstream blocks the path, causing the banks to overflow.

Whether you have experienced coastal flooding or a flash flood, SERVPRO has the resources to assist your home or business in the reconstruction process. Contact us anytime when flooding or water damage makes a mess in your life.

Asbestos Abatement Testing

  • First, determine when your home, or building was constructed. Asbestos was banned by the US Government in 1978. Structures on Oahu may have used asbestos in the construction process through 1989. It's a good rule of thumb to have an asbestos abatement company test if you suspect asbestos.
  • Second, see if there are signs of disturbed asbestos materials. Look for warning signs of degrading construction materials. Worn-out and disintegrating pipes, walls, insulation, vinyl flooring and other materials. When asbestos is undisturbed and intact, it can often be kept in place with minimal risk of exposure. But when it starts to break down and the fibers are released in the air, it becomes toxic.
  • Third, call an asbestos testing or abatement company to have the materials tested. You can check for signs of asbestos on your own, but testing should be done by a certified professional using special equipment. If asbestos is present, hire a contractor to repair or remove the materials that contain it to ensure the safety of people using the building.

*Inspections should always be done if there are asbestos concerns.

Asbestos Removal

Removing asbestos-containing materials without testing beforehand is a more dangerous and intrusive. Once the asbestos is airborne, breathing the toxic material can cause scarring to the tissue of the lungs and even lead to cancer.

When you have a water damage to a home or structure, a demolition, or a renovation where asbestos is suspected - you must first have the materials tested to ensure safety.

Calling Licensed Asbestos Mitigation Companies

Asbestos abatement contractors are trained and licensed in handling asbestos. You could collect the sample on your own, but you would still have to give the samples to an EPA-certified laboratory.

SERVPRO of Central Honolulu is a licensed asbestos contractor located in Oahu. We can help you with asbestos testing, removal, and cleaning. We will ensure the safety of the people in your home or building.

Call us at 808-744-2730 to request service or to request a call back.

Spring Brings Weather Hazards to Hawaii | SERVPRO® of Central Honolulu

3/4/2022 (Permalink)

The United States is one of the world’s biggest countries, behind only Russia and Canada in terms of total land area (though China is larger if all outlying US territories are excluded).

However, because the country contains such a large and diverse area under one roof, seasonal weather in the country is not uniform—different parts of the country experience their own varying degrees of weather threats.

Let’s take a look at the diversity of weather events each area in the country might anticipate, as well as what we should be aware of here in Hawaii for when spring arrives here and around the country.

During the spring months in the Pacific Northwest, heavy rain can cause floods and property damage. Snow will continue to fall at higher altitudes far into the spring season, and the melting and runoff connected with it will cause its own difficulties

The Upper Midwest and Northeast have the longest winters due to the frigid weather that lasts all year. From Maine to the Dakotas, extreme cold and the possibility of snowstorms and blizzards are expected until late spring or early summer, when temperatures begin to rise.

The southern West Coast will be on the lookout for extreme heat waves that could endanger lives and property, while total annual rainfall in the South Pacific, including here in Hawaii, sometimes exceeds 300 inches in some regions, and as little as 20 inches in others. Also, as consequence of tectonic activity, Hawaii will also have to be on the lookout for potential tsunamis during this time.

Windstorms, derechos and the possibility of wildfires threaten havoc throughout the heartland, from Iowa to Texas. Wildfires may spread swiftly when winds are strong and the weather is dry. As you may be aware, a portion of this area is known as Tornado Alley, due to the high frequency of tornadoes and is particularly active as cold and warm air collide with the spring season.

Finally, extreme weather in the Southeast is a possibility, ranging from tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in the landlocked regions to hazardous rip currents on the coast and even the threat of spring hurricanes.

Residents of the United States, regardless of where they live, face the dangers of extreme weather. While yours may differ from that of a friend or family a few states away, it’s always a good idea to be prepared.

If extreme weather leaves you with damage from water, fire or other elements, help is a click away. Contact SERVPRO for fast, expert recovery.

You’ve worked hard to get where you’re at, and we want to help make sure a disaster doesn’t take you down.

If the pandemic has taught us one thing, it’s that it is essential to have a disaster plan in place should anything outside of your control try to shut you down. Three-quarters of small businesses in the United States don’t have a disaster plan in place, but that doesn’t have to be you. We want to help you do everything you can to protect what you’ve built.

Every Fire Is Constrained by These 4 Things

1/27/2022 (Permalink)

stock fire photo Stock Fire Photo

Fire seems like a wild, almost uncontrollable force—we use words like raging to describe it because it seems so wild. And while fires are certainly difficult to manage, the truth is that every fire has its limits, and every fire’s limits are the same. How can this be true?

Enter the fire tetrahedron. Its shape may seem a little random, but it only matters in that it represents the four equal things of which every fire consists.

Each side is a vital part every fire must have—and without any one side, a fire falls apart.

The 4 Things a Fire Needs to Live

Fuel. Every fire requires that there be something consumable upon which it can act. In other words, a fire has to happen to something.

Heat. Whatever object or material a fire happens upon must first be heated to a high-enough degree that it combusts. Some objects’ flash points are lower than others, thus they combust more readily.

Oxygen. The combustion reaction requires oxygen, and the oxidation process (of converting said oxygen to carbon dioxide) has to happen not only once, but…well let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Chemical Chain Reaction. All of the above conditions must not only be met, but maintained—in a chain reaction that must continue in order for a fire to survive.

The 4 Ways to Stop a Fire

Cool it. If a fuel source can be cooled by, say, pouring water on it, the fire can’t continue. The reestablishment of a thermal balance keeps the rate at which the fuel source rises in heat unable to compete with the rate at which it cools.

Smother it. Shielding a fire from the oxygen it needs keeps it from fueling the combustion and oxidation processes—so keep that fire blanket handy at home.

Starve it. When all a fire can readily eat has been devoured, it can’t continue. It stands to reason, then, that removing a fuel source is one way to mitigate a fire’s destructive potential.

Interrupt the chain reaction. As we said earlier, every fire has to have all these elements together, in a continual dance, in order to keep moving. As it turns out, there are certain compounds which, when introduced into a fire’s atmosphere, actually disturb the chemical chain reaction itself, causing the fire to hiccup and eventually halt.

If the fire tetrahedron makes a wreck of your home or business, we’re ready around the clock to help you recover. Contact SERVPRO anytime for fast, thorough cleanup and recovery after a fire.

The Water Damage Restoration Proces

1/27/2022 (Permalink)

Stock Water Damager Floating House

Every day, 14,000 Americans experience a water damage incident. If you happen to be one of them, you can trust SERVPRO to see you through the cleanup and recovery process.

When you contact your local SERVPRO team, we’ll get you back in the dry with a thorough, methodical process. Here’s what you can expect in a typical water damage cleanup scenario:

Emergency Contact. When you reach out to us, our specialists will ask you several guiding questions to help us understand the nature of your specific emergency. Once we know what’s going on, we will create an appointment time for you and your local SERVPRO professionals to meet, survey the damage and create a plan for restoration. We’ll do this as soon as possible, since taking action quickly is critical.

Inspection and Water Damage Assessment. When the SERVPRO team arrives on the scene, they will first help you stop the source of the water damage if necessary. They will then evaluate the damage and walk you through the damage present, noting any hazards that may be caused from it. They’ll then determine what can be restored versus what needs replacement.

Water Removal. Typically, water extraction is the next step. Hundreds, maybe even thousands, of gallons of water will be sucked out with powerful pumps and extraction units. Complete removal of the water damaging your property stops the spread of water, reduces your home’s drying time and prevents mold growth.

Damaged Material Removal. We will convey to you any items and materials that will need replacement, and these things will be removed as quickly as possible in order to speed up the drying of the materials that can be restored.

Cleaning, Sanitizing and Deodorization. It’s no surprise that water damage can create the need for cleanup and deodorizing of many materials in the home. We’ll quickly get to the task of making this happen, using industry-leading equipment and time-tested techniques to restore your belongings and remove the effects of water.

Drying. The drying process doesn’t end there. When the bulk of the water is gone, there is remaining water that eludes the eye, which we will remove with powerful pumps and cutting-edge equipment, based on the unique needs of your situation. Returning moisture levels to normal is crucial in the prevention of mold.

Monitoring. While your home dries, your SERVPRO team will be in constant contact, visiting daily to make sure the drying process is going as it should, adjusting equipment performance as needed, and monitoring the situation for peak effectiveness.

Repairs and Construction. Once the drying is done, we’ll handle any reconstruction or repair that may be necessary to restore your property to preloss conditions, from minor resurfacing to large-scale rebuilds. We can keep your costs and time down by being your one-stop solution for mitigation, drying and reconstruction.

When water damage strikes, make the call to SERVPRO for A-to-Z cleanup and restoration. We’ll make your damaged property look “Like it never even happened.”

Summer Storm Awareness

1/27/2022 (Permalink)

Summer is in full swing, and it brings with it all the things about summer we love. Many of us have vacations we’ve been waiting on seemingly forever, higher temperatures practically beg us to hit the pool or beach, and days are long and full of sunshine—well, most of the time, that is.

If it sometimes seems as though summer months lend themselves to more thunderstorms, that would be because it’s totally true. Atmospheric conditions, especially in certain parts of the country, are more amenable to creating them, given the presence of the two things most necessary for storms to emerge, namely moisture and warm air.

Here in Hawaii, our storms are more rare, though, but Kona storms do come and cause inconvenience. Last year, we received our first tornado warnings in over a decade.

Though storms may be a common part of summer, that doesn’t mean they should be treated lightly. Always pay attention to storm alerts, and consider cancelling outdoor events if heavy storms are predicted.

Pay attention to local weather forecasts, and get yourself an NOAA Weather radio to continue to receive alerts if power is lost.

Flooding is always possible and rarely predictable, but if it’s deemed likely, you should plan to stay at home and off the roads. Extreme storms can break tree branches and throw backyard objects and trash cans around. Keep trees trimmed and move garbage cans and patio furniture to safe locations.

Dozens of people die every year in storm-related incidents, so caution is always the best choice. Taking storms for granted is a mistake.

Stay indoors when lightning is present. It’s not safe to go back outside until you haven’t heard thunder for a full half hour, because lightning can strike up to 10 miles from the nearest rain.

Your mother was right—you should stay away from windows and avoid bathing or showering during a storm.

In cases of tornadoes or extreme thunderstorms, make sure you have an emergency kit prepared, and that you know the evacuation route for your area.

If flooding occurs, stay on high ground and avoid flood waters if at all possible. Do not attempt to drive or walk through moving water, as it can easily knock you down or even carry your car away. It can also conceal roads that have been totally washed away.

There are any number of dangers that can come into play in a thunderstorm, and it’s always best to be cautious and put things on hold until storms safely pass. If storms cause damage to your home or business, SERVPRO is ready to make things right again.

Make the Most of Minutes if Your Pauoa Home Is Damaged

Insurance Insurance Liason

Do you know how common home damage claims are in the United States?

If you guessed a few thousand or even one-hundred thousand are reported each year, your estimate would be very low. In fact, experts estimate that millions of American homeowners file damage claims each year.

Homeowners file claims for a variety of reasons. They can include severe weather issues, like wind, hail and rain. Other claims happen because of home accidents and appliance malfunctions.

On the surface, it might seem like these different types of claims have little in common. But in reality, they do have one important similarity: The sooner the repair process gets started, the better your outcome is likely to be.

Minutes and hours make a difference, especially if your home suffers water damage. You’ll want to move quickly to stop it from spreading.

Floors can buckle and warp within a few days. Upholstery can begin to fade and stain. You may even begin to smell the first signs of mold (a musty smell in the air) within a few hours.

Preparing for Tropical Storms on Oahu HI

Storm Damage Tropical Storm on Oahu

Preparing for Tropical Storms on Oahu HI:

On Oahu, a good practice is to be prepared for Tropical Storms and heavy rains in Hawaii. We do not know what is in store for the next several months, or next year for that matter. Below are some best practices for Preparing for a Tropical Weather in Hawaii. Please, start thinking about and doing these things if you haven’t already. They can make a difference in both the safety of you and your family, and the damage to your home.

  1. Get Hurricane AND Flood Insurance Coverage for Your Home Before a storm is on its Way

Many people in Hawaii have hurricane insurance for their homes. It is strongly recommended. But did you know that hurricane insurance is only WIND insurance. Whether or not you are in a flood zone requiring mandatory flood insurance, it is also a good idea to also have FLOOD insurance. This can help protect you from the water damage caused by a hurricane. Water damage can be immense in a hurricane, but also in other events such a tropical storms and tsunamis. BOTH hurricane and flood insurance are important items to consider when preparing for a hurricane in Hawaii. Keep your insurance contact in a place where you can easily find it.

  1. Declutter Your Yard & Garage, Trim Your Trees

During a recent storm threat, we and many of our friends and neighbors worked in our yards for a day or more preparing for the storm. It is recommended to remove lawn furniture, potted plants, decor, patio umbrellas, etc. that may become projectiles which break and fly through your windows. These can harm both people and property. You are advised to bring these items inside where they won’t cause harm. But do you have room for all these items? Consider getting rid of unused items and old junk that may be in your yard before hurricane season or now, if you haven’t already. At the same time, declutter your shed, garage, or carport, so that you have room to put all these items when preparing for a storm in Hawaii. Apparently, many people had this idea, but too late, as the lines at the dumps on Oahu were reportedly very long, the day after Hurricane Lane’s demise.

  1. Figure Out a Water Storage Plan When Preparing for a Storm in Hawaii

Don’t run out and buy cases of bottled water (unless that is your only alternative). It is not only expensive, but the bottles are harmful to the environment. Plan ahead and use water from the tap. Hawaii water is safe to drink from the tap and is important in preparing for a storm in Hawaii. In this recent storm, I heard several creative ideas on how to store tap water. A few of our neighbors purchased a large (100 gallon) bladder that can be filled from the tap and stored in the bathtub. It comes complete with a pump. We don’t have a bathtub to fill in our home, but purchased some food-safe garbage cans which held 32 gallons each and were filled from the tap. One fit perfectly in our shower. Stored water is necessary for both drinking and cooking, and for hygiene, bathing, and flushing toilets, if the water supply is compromised. Make sure you also have liquid bleach available and add a drop or two to your water, as necessary.

  1. Pack a Storm/Emergency “Go Bag”

In the event you must evacuate in preparing for a Storm in Hawaii, you should have a “Go Bag” packed and readyHawaii Emergency Management Agency has prepared a suggested checklist for this, which includes items such as flashlights, batteries, food, water, first aid supplies, important documents, hygiene supplies, etc. You should find the lightest weight (but sturdy) bag possible, and also, consider rolling storage for these items, since you will need to carry them, and food and water can be heavy. A waterproof bag would not be a bad idea either.

  1. Prepare for high rising water.

In a Tropical Storm the water will rise. Depending on how close you are to the ocean, streams, or mountains the water must go somewhere. Be prepared to allow the water to travel towards the ocean and unfortunate your home may be in the way. As the storm increases watch for water build up areas around your home and on the roof, freeing up anything that stops the water from flowing. Sandbags can be heavy and hard to move around. There are several other alternatives to use in a pinch, https://worstroom.com/sandbag-alternatives/ most of these eco friendly bags fill with water and will help guide the water to where you want it to go VS creating a dam.

Mold Growth behind cabinets.

1/19/2022 (Permalink)

Mold Mold growth behind cabinets in a Kitchen

"Mold is not something to mess around with."

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors, especially in Hawaii. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business without a professional. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce health effects.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

This home in Kailua had a leak from the upstairs into the Kitchen a different company fixed the leak and then the home sat for almost 1 year. By the time we showed up and removed the cabinets there was mold present and we had to further mitigate.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Follow These Safety Tips If You Suspect Sewage Water

Drywall removed from the bottom half of a home to be replaced Affected drywall has been removed and will be replaced

If you see visible sewage, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the bacteria throughout your home. When bacteria is disturbed, the bacteria can become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Central Honolulu for sewage water remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the area.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected sewage water.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.

We received a job in a condo in Salt Lake. The unit had a Sewage Drain pipe break. The Sewage Drain pipe leaked into their unit affecting their hallway, bathroom, and bedroom. Because the water was from a drain pipe it is considered category 3 water. Category 3 water is considered grossly contaminated, which means everything that is affected by category 3 water is considered unsalvageable. The pipe break was right above the floor. The water leaked across the top of the tile, and ran along the lower part of the drywall. Fortunately, the tile was sealed which stopped the water from getting underneath of it. Since the IICRC standard states that all affected materials are unsalvageable we had to perform a 2 foot flood cut on the drywall to remove the affected drywall. We also needed to remove the sink vanity because the bottom and sides were swollen. We performed services by removing all affected materials, bio-washing the floor to sanitize the tile, removing the affected drywall, and sanitizing the steel framing. Once all the procedures were complete and everything cleaned up, our reconstruction team was able to replace the drywall.

How to Salvage Water Damaged Items

8/26/2021 (Permalink)

A photo of a clean, white room with a white couch that is flooded. The water is visibly rising into the sheetrock When you're in need of professional help cleaning your water damaged property, call SERVPRO of Central Honolulu

The damage caused by flooding can be quite extensive; often affecting the structure of the building, personal belongings, and even your walls will require professional care. To ensure the most cost-effective recovery, it is important to salvage what you can.

  1. Curtains, Rugs and Other Small Items

Small belongings may be quite simple to take care of yourself. Depending on the water damage, fabric decor items such as curtains, pillows, or rugs may sometimes be machine washable or dry cleaned. If the damage is drastic or has a high level of contamination the items will need to be pretreated.

  1. Furniture

Furniture items require special handling and treatment. If the item has absorbed a certain amount of water, replacement may be the only option. If the damage is from a clean water source, such as a burst pipe, they may be salvageable. Non-porous material is much easier to clean, you can scrub them yourself with and anti-bacterial cleanser.

  1. Paper Documents and Artwork

If your flooded company building has resulted in damaged documents or artwork, you may be feeling a little hopeless. These are delicate and highly porous, so restoring them can be difficult. Luckily, a professional service will have access to several cleanup methods. Techniques such as freeze or thermal drying, dehumidification and gamma irradiation can save many paper items.

  1. Electronics

When it comes to electronics, you need to be extra careful. Turning on a wet or damp device may cause the circuit to become permanently damaged. If you have damaged computers or equipment, a professional service can have them inspected and cleaned by a technician to ensure the best results.

Dealing with flooding in a company building is always hard on business, and that's an understatement, we know. A cleanup and restoration service can help reduce the negative effects by restoring your items and property.

If you have suffered water damage call SERVPRO of Central Honolulu at (808)235-5015.

An eerie photo of palm trees blowing in high winds atop a dark and stormy sky Take time to prepare for the next hurricane now

The beautiful islands of the Pacific don't often see damage from hurricanes, but it is still possible. Hurricane Iniki left over 6,000 homes damaged with displaced families. This devastation left a real impact on Hawaii families. Luckily, we have the time now to prepare before the next storm. Here are some recommendations from SERVPRO of Central Honolulu and FEMA.

How to Prepare The Inside Of Your Home

  • Review your insurance policy
    • By understanding your coverage before the storm, you can save yourself some headache and anxiety during the heat of the storm allowing you to focus on what matters most. This can also provide help after the storm, if and when you need to file a claim.
  • Document your homes contents now
    • Take a few moments to take detailed photographs of your valuable possessions. Its also a good idea to walk through your home in a video to take note of the majority of your home. Photos and videos can be of great help so snap away!
  • Protect windows and glass doors
    • Reinforce windows with storm shutters to prevent windows from breaking under the high winds and possible debris. Another option is to add shatter-resistant film to windows.
  • Build a Safe Room
    • Even if your home is up to code, you may find comfort in adding a safe room for extra protection. A safe room is built to withstand higher pressures that can come with severe storms and is designed to protect you and your family.

As tourism returns to Hawaii, many rentals are starting to welcome guests again. Hosting short term guests can place your home at risk, as there are no long term residents to notice the possible mold growth or water damage to your property.

  • Cabinets
  • Closets
  • Behind/Below Furniture
  • Small enclosed areas
  • Dark/Damp Rooms

Pipe leaks and further water damage can also happen slowly over time. To ensure that your rental is safe, check your property for water damage in these areas:

  • Bathrooms
  • Under sinks
  • Behind large appliances
  • Hoses
  • All faucets

Is Your Honolulu Business At Risk of Fire?

7/28/2021 (Permalink)

A photo of a warehouse with flames in front of boxes SERVPRO of Central Honolulu is your trusted source for quality repair services

Fire damage in your Honolulu business is a serious concern. The damages can halt business for weeks on end. Unfortunately, no business is immune to the risk of a fire. Certain facilities may be more likely to endure damage from a fire, such as a restaurant that uses open flames. However, fire hazards are present in most workplaces regardless of the work activity throughout the day. When you know what these hazards are, you can take proper steps to address and mitigate those risks and prevent possible fire damage and smoke damage.

Electrical Concerns

When damaged electrical wiring can spark and quickly ignite a fire. Electrical wiring damage may include frayed cords, such as those connecting desktop computers to the wall power outlets. It may also include damage to internal wiring inside the walls, and these may be damaged by rodents, pests and other forces. Electrical fires may also start when power sockets are overloaded or when equipment gets too hot. It is important to periodically review your company's wiring to identify areas of concern that need to be addressed.

Flammable or Combustible Materials

Flammable and combustible materials are most commonly associated with industrial and warehouse environments, yet even restaurants, hotels, dry cleaners and many other types of businesses may store combustible materials on-site. These materials should remain properly sealed according to the manufacturer’s recommendations at all times.

Poor Equipment Maintenance

Other hazards in Honolulu workplaces are related to poor equipment maintenance. For example, failing to replace rusted items, or clean out storage rooms regularly may result in the accumulation of dust and other flammable debris. A gas leak in your business could result in a fire or an explosion. Fire hazards related to poor maintenance may also include dusty, dirty or greasy components, such as air ducts and vents, kitchen exhaust vents and many other features that are used throughout your facility. Scheduling necessary maintenance can decrease fire risk in these areas.

This is just a short list of the possible fire hazards that could result in serious damage in your business. If your Honolulu business has already experienced fire damage, it is essential that repair work is completed as soon as possible. SERVPRO of Central Honolulu is your trusted source for quality repair services. To request assistance with your damaged building, contact us today. You can reach us at (808)-235-5015.

4 Things To Know About Home Fire Sprinklers

7/27/2021 (Permalink)

A close up photo of a sprinkler installed in a home Learn more about fire safety now to prevent a disaster later.

The lion’s share of fire deaths occurs in the home. Fire sprinklers are an effective tool which can save lives and diminish property damage. Many times, a fire sprinkler will extinguish the fire prior to the arrival of the fire department. Check out four facts about home sprinkler systems:

  1. A home fire sprinkler system can cause homeowner’s insurance premiums to be lower.
    • The investment in a fire sprinkler system for your home pays off in great ways. Not only you will be able to have more peace of mind knowing you are adding a layer of protection to your home and belongings, your homeowner’s insurance premium may be lower as well.
  2. Fire sprinklers are environmentally friendly.
    • A fire sprinkler uses roughly 10 times less water than the fire department would to contain the same fire. Fire sprinklers are environmentally friendly, because they reduce the amount of run-off water and pollution that fire damages cause.
  3. Only high temperature smoke will activate a fire sprinkler.
    • Rest easy! Your cigar or burnt toast will not activate the sprinkler system.
  4. Maintenance of a home fire sprinkler system is very easy!
    • Inspect your home to ensure there are no objects that would prevent the water from successfully spilling out. Do not paint the fire sprinkler or hang anything from it.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration: “Home fire sprinkler systems help to reduce the risk of civilian and firefighter fatalities and injuries, homeowner insurance premiums, and uninsured property losses. Yet—many homes aren’t equipped with automatic sprinkler systems often seen in hotels and businesses. Help members of your community understand the effectiveness and value of having a fire sprinkler system in their homes.” Click here to learn more from the USFA.

In Honolulu we see rain every day. It's usually just a quick and light sprinkle to freshen the plants on your lanai. Occasionally we will find a heavier and more powerful rain come through the islands that can come with a big storm or suddenly after a sunny day.

One of these rains filled this customer’s home with all the mud and water from the mountain above in just a few hours. By the time the homeowners realized the rains picking up, it was too late to place sandbags around the perimeter of the home to protect from incoming water. As a result the water rushed into the home and brought inches of standing mud along with it.

SERVPRO of Central Honolulu was called to help this family restore their home back to its original glory. After removing the mud and moisture, the professionals at SERVPRO of Central Honolulu finished the job with a thorough cleaning.

Heavy Rains Don’t Have to Lead to Home Rain Damage l SERVPRO® of Central Honolulu

6/29/2021 (Permalink)

bright blue rain splashing into a pool of water If you need help dealing with any damage caused by water, contact SERVPRO of Central Honolulu today.

What are the top causes of home water damage? Would you put rain on your list?

When asked how water damage happens, homeowners cite various problems like severe floods. But there are other ways for water to damage your property, too.

You may also think about problems like sewer backups. Problems with plumbing in the kitchen and bathroom can also do their share of water damage. Those issues are well-known, and homeowners usually know what to do to prevent them.

But some types of water damage actually worsen over time. That includes the damage that heavy rains bring. Because rain is a common fixture in most forecasts, we don’t think much about it. But if your home has any maintenance issues, rain can cause damage that will get progressively worse.

Avoid Heavy Rain Damage This Season

The projects on this “to-do” list can help you ensure your home is safer from water damage. If you haven’t already considered them, now is a great time to explore these options and make changes to your home.

Correct any yard drainage issues. Knowing how your yard drains is vital to protecting your home. If you notice that your yard is draining toward your home, then you might want to get in touch with a landscaping expert to look for ways to protect your yard.

Landscape with native plants. If you do a little homework, the flowers and shrubs you use to help you landscape your home and add curb appeal can also become an added layer of protection. Native plants can help.

Consider sealing your roof. Experts estimate that almost 95% of damage is caused by water finding its way through gaps in your shingles, which can be prevented with this step.

If you need help dealing with damage caused by water, fire or any other issue, we’re here to help you restore your home. We have crews who are available 247 in the event of an emergency. Contact us at any time to learn more about us and how we can help you restore your home to its original state.

Rain coming down on a home a cars in the driveway  Call SERVPRO of Central Honolulu if you face damages after a storm.

During the period from midsummer through December, residents prepare for the possibility of flood damage in Kaneohe due to severe storms and even hurricane activity. High winds, torrential rains, and storm surge cause rain and salt water to flood into the crawl spaces and lower levels of homes. We count as our core mission helping our community recover from the effects of these violent storms, using highly trained water removal and damage remediation technicians and powerful, professional grade restoration equipment.

SERVPRO is prepared for a speedy response when flood damage threatens your home. As we answer your call, we will schedule an appointment to assess the damage to your premises and to make a plan to both remove the flood waters and then dry out your house and possessions.

After most of the water has been extracted, SERVPRO technicians will begin measuring moisture content and establishing drying goals. High-efficiency air movers and dehumidifiers rapidly reduce the moisture content of walls, floors, ceilings, and other structural components. Periodically our workers reassess the moisture levels to ensure drying is progressing as expected. Some building materials will be deteriorated beyond repair because of the saturation or the force of the flooding, but our focus is restoration over demolition.

We will work with your insurance carrier throughout the restoration process. We will also provide payment plans for self pay customers. SERVPRO of Central Honolulu follows a precise inventory protocol if we move boxes, clothing, and other items from the flood damaged areas of your home. Typically we find a protected area within your property to store your belongings as we help you review what contents can be restored and what may need to be discarded.

SERVPRO of Central Honolulu has the tools and the personnel to assist when storm activity results in flood damage. Give us a call at 808-235-5015 so we can get started on your project!

Control Moisture Now to Prevent Mold Later

6/21/2021 (Permalink)

If mold is left untreated, the repairs become increasingly costly. The best way to handle mold spores is to tackle them early on before any damage can be caused.

Some types of mold can affect the structural integrity of your home and some types are even dangerous to human health. All mold growth needs moisture to grow. By managing humidity in your commercial building now, you can save yourself time and money later.

SERVPRO of Central Honolulu offers these tips to help prevent the growth of mold:

  • Clean spills or leaks quickly
  • Make sure roof gutters are in good shape
  • Don’t let water collect around the house foundation
  • Don’t let water collect in the air-conditioner drip pans
  • Keep drains clear
  • Use exhaust fans
  • Use air conditioners and/or dehumidifiers
  • Use the bathroom fan when you shower
  • Appliances should vent to the outside. Even stoves, washers, and dryers produce water vapor
  • Increase air movement
    • Open doors & windows
    • Use fans
  • Insulate cold surfaces like water pipes
  • Keep the temperature comfortable

If you need help controlling moisture or mold growth in your home, remember to call SERVPRO of Central Honolulu!

Spring is a beautiful time in Honolulu. Weather is pleasant, the jacaranda trees are in full bloom, and it just feels like life has a new freshness to it.

The beauty of nature beckons us once more to leave the living room and enjoy some fresh air, and we’ll take any old excuse to do it.

There are also many social events outside which involve the time-honored tradition of barbecuing. Graduation parties, gender reveals, church functions and family reunions all call for some steaks, wings or veggies to be smoking in the background.

But this increase in backyard activity also means an increase in home fires. In fact, spring sees more daily fires on average than any other time of year. So as the season gets into full swing, let’s go over a few basics you should be handling to make sure your spring and summer are fire-safe.

The grill. Grills get the finger pointed at them first for spring home fires, but they’ve earned the stereotype. The combination of high heat and flammable materials, sometimes even an open flame, give fires an easy place to manifest. Make sure your grill is in good working order with no leaks or weaknesses in the structure, keep it away from anything flammable (including decking or siding), and clean it thoroughly when you’re finished. Almost 20% of grill fires are due to poor cleaning.

The fire pit. Backyard conversations around the fire pit are a regular occurrence during these months, but make sure you’re doing it safely. Have a bucket of water within arm’s reach to douse any dancing flames, and use it to slowly and safely put out the fire when you’re done. Embers should be cool to the touch before you go inside. Also, don’t use leaves or pine needles in your fire, because they create lots of tiny embers that can travel easily on the wind. Never leave fires unattended, and never leave children or pets by the fire alone.

Chimneys and dryer vents. It’s rare for homes in our area to have fireplaces, but if you do, take steps to care for it now. Instead of waiting until fall, clean your chimney out now that winter is over, and get rid of soot and ash buildup inside that creates a fire hazard. And clean your dryer’s vent pipe, ensuring no lint has caked inside—that stuff goes up in flames quickly.

If you encounter fire damage at your home or business, no matter the cause, your local SERVPRO agents will be there faster and have it cleaned up sooner. Call or click today

What to do when your home finds fire and smoke damage?

6/2/2021 (Permalink)

A photo of a customers home with our SERVPRO team working on the cleaning SERVPRO of Central Honolulu servicing a home after fire and smoke damage

Localized fires can be caused by big or small household appliances. Small appliances that receive daily use easily become fire-starters simply from normal wear and tear.

Bathroom fires can be started by any appliance that develops a frayed cord. When they do, these bathroom items can become deadly shock-hazards. When a cord remains plugged in, sparking and subsequent ignition is a risk that can leave any family devastated.

Prevention is said to be easier than repairing and restoring fire damage, but even the most diligent people still experience this kind of catastrophe. Knowing that SERVPRO has the technicians with proper training, certification, and experience in all sizes of restoration gives you the reassurance needed when disaster strikes you and your family. When a fire happens in a small room, the blaze might remain there, but this occurs in few cases. In most situations, fire spreads quickly, especially when the home is unoccupied. Regardless of how large or small a fire is, smoke spreads into every open area in a home, leaving behind a horrible scent that can last indefinitely.

We are skilled in all phases of fire damage restoration, including extracting all water and other fire extinguishing foams, ensuring the safety of your home's structure. Our services also include removal, and restoration of all burnt materials, refinishing and repainting of walls and ceilings and deodorization. When we finish, your family can return to a home that looks and feels “Like it never even happened.”

We recognize that your home is of vital importance to your family, and we work hard each time to ensure we work both quickly and thoroughly to restore your property to livable standards.

It's never too early to prepare for the next storm

5/26/2021 (Permalink)

Photo of hurricane from satellite Prepare for hurricane season early!

When a storm is headed to the islands all of your neighbors will be running to local grocers and hardware stores to prepare. Now is a great time to prepare before storm season while time and resources are ample.

Unsure where to start? Here are a few tips

  • Hurricane clips
    • Many roofs in Hawaii are not prepared for a heavy wind storm. Hurricane clips connect your roof to wall structure and are designed to withstand the upward pressure that a hurricane can put on your roof. Consider installing them on your home this summer.
  • Yard maintenance
    • By keeping up with yard work now, you can save yourself a hassle later. You can protect your home by getting rid of dried out and dead flora in your area.
  • Secure windows and other glass
    • Clearly, windows are a vulnerable part of your home. They need to be secured before a storm and this can take some time and effort. Do it early before the storm is on the way.

Hidden Mold

12/9/2020 (Permalink)

Wallpaper glue is the perfect food source for mold Wet ceiling collapses leaving mold-ridden backing of the wallpaper

There are instances where microbial growth can be hidden. Especially here in Hawaii. The climate on the island is a perfect petri dish for microbial growth to grow quickly. The humidity and consistent temperature provide a perfect incubation environment for spores to root and grow. In this picture, you can see the backside of wallpaper. The wallpaper backing is full of adhesive which is a perfect food source for mold. The wallpaper itself acts as a moisture barrier trapping the humidity between the wall and the open-air space. This is a prime example of how growth can go undetected for extended periods of time. When considering cutting into a wall with wallpaper or removing the wallpaper to freshen up the look of a room, always consider the possibility of growth on the backside.  If growth is found, don't hesitate to call the professionals at SERVPRO immediately to reduce cross-contamination. The professionals at SERVPRO will set up mitigate the mold by setting containment which will stop the mold spores from spreading through the property making the renovation safer for all.

Stay safe this holiday season

holidays for happy memories not for scary memories - image of burnt kitchen Kitchen fires can destroy a home, play it safe this holiday keep a close eye on all your holiday cooking

The holiday season is upon us and our ovens and stoves are going to be used more often than any other time of the year. Our gatherings may be different this year than previous years but they still can bring joyous lasting memories. We here at SERVPRO want to encourage safety and habits to help the memories be the happy holiday kind.  This holiday season please remember to practice safety while cooking. In a study between 2013-2017, 27% of reported fires occurred in homes. Most home fires and fire casualties result from five causes: cooking, heating, electrical distribution and lighting equipment, intentional fire setting, and smoking materials. Sadly, 79% of fire related deaths and 73% of all fire-related injuries occurred from home fires. Remarkably, US fire departments responded to an estimated average of 354,400 home structure fires per year, which resulted in an annual average of 2,620 civilian deaths, 11,220 civilian fire injures, and $6.9 billion in direct property damage. Over the five-year period of 2013-2017, cooking was the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Be sure to follow fire safety tips such as installing smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas. Test these smoke alarms every month. Talk with all family members about a fire escape plan and practice the plan twice a year. If a fire occurs in your home, get out, stay out, and call for help.

Pack-Out

Pack Out We take all precaution necessary to protect your belongings

Part of the restoration process can involve the complete reconstruction of a home or a section of a home. This can require added measures over and above just remediation. Space is not always an option here in Oahu, so the professionals here at SERVPRO offer pack-out services. What this entails is careful packing and inventorying of personal contents, that will then be stored off-site in a climate-controlled storage unit until reconstruction is completed.  This type of service could be used when flooring needs to be removed and replaced, when asbestos abatement needs to be performed and the contents need to be relocated to avoid cross-contamination, or when a large demolition needs to be performed such as a ceiling removal. The professionals at SERVPRO will carefully pack items to be stored short-term or long-term depending on the situation.  Call today to see if SERVPRO can help speed up your reconstruction process.

The Best Ways To Save Your Belongings From Water Damage

6/25/2020 (Permalink)

inch of water flooding kitchen floor Here are some of our tips for salvaging any water damaged belongings in your home or business.

How to Salvage Water Damaged Items

When your company building in Honolulu HI is affected by any flood damage, there will likely be many unforeseen damages that will need to be addressed. The structure of the building, affected belongings, and even your walls will require professional care.

Ross, located in Honolulu, was affected by a biohazard. With backed up pipes and drains, contaminants rushed up onto the bathroom and hallway floors. Because the water had human waste contaminants, the water job was a category 3. With such a high category of contamination the cleaning and restoration process becomes much more detailed. With a category 3 if the water is too set, or seeps into any cracks, walls, or items, these items are to be torn out, treated, and replaced.

Luckily the damages to this commercial building were minimal. The water had not set into the grout or the walls. Meaning all that was needed was for the water and contaminants to be extracted. We removed all waste and then cleaned and sanitized all affected surfaces. Our team was in an out within hours.

Protect Your Business From Future Water Damage

6/25/2020 (Permalink)

clean restaurant kitchen Keep your business safe from any future water damage with these tips!

Tips From the Professionals

The dry season on Oahu isn’t a long one. But the lack of water on the island might distract you from the possible water saturation inside your Oahu business. To ensure that your business can stay busy, check your restaurant for early signs of water damage. When treated early, water damage is an easy fix, but if a fix is prolonged for too long the damage can be a costly and timely matter.  Keep your eyes peeled for any area near water pipes, faucets and drains. Damp areas are an attractive spot for a mold colony to grow, and that’s something no one wants in their restaurant. Regular inspections of areas in your restaurant allow you to take care of issues before they can become serious.

These are the top three places to check regularly for water damage:

  • Staff Bathroom

Water is essential when it comes to the bath area. Most commercial staff bathrooms are cleaned thoroughly several times a week, and these times are great for checking for damp areas and leaks of any kind. Look in the least traveled spots, such as corners of any closets, behind the toilet, and under the sink. If there are any leaks in these places, they can be a hazard until they are completely dry. Investing in a dehumidifier for bathroom areas is a sufficient way to keep the dangers of mold out of sight and out of mind.

  • Main Kitchen

This area of the business sees heavy-duty usage on a daily basis. Watch out for spills and leaks. Clean any water up immediately to ensure that they do not attract mold spores. Mold spores, which rest in the air, occur daily and are common in Hawaii. Check the spaces under and around the coolers and freezers are places that can be damaged by water without you noticing. Get out your flashlight and make sure you see every nook and cranny clearly.

  • Dishwashing Area

The area around the dishwasher has nooks and crannies that require a deep look and cleaning. A leak behind an automatic dishwasher or under a commercial sink can create huge issues down the road. Add the humidity in the air and possible unseen leaks or drips, and you have a recipe for the establishment of a mold colony. Have the machinery pulled out from the wall regularly, and make sure the areas behind them are clean, dry, and disinfected.

If your business has suffered water damaged call SERVPRO at (808)-744-2730.

Your OAHU Vacation Rental May Be At Risk Of Water Or Mold Damage

11/22/2019 (Permalink)

buildings in waikiki on water front It’s important to keep watch on your vacation rentals! Go through our SERVPRO recommended checklist to make certain your rental is safe today!

Is your Vacation Rental at risk?

With new vacation rental laws being enforced starting August 1st, 2019, many vacation rental homes are being shut down.

All vacation rentals have a constant flow of short term residents coming in and out. One thing many do not realize, these homes are at risk, as there are no long term residents to notice the possible mold growth or water damage to the home or property.

As new vacation rental laws are being enforced more prevalently, many vacation rentals will be needing a change in their targeted population, including possible long term rental agreements.

In making these new changes SERVPRO recommends homeowners walk through their homes and check for any fungi growth in common places such as:

- Cabinets

- Closets

- Behind/Below Furniture

- Small enclosed areas

- Dark/Damp Rooms

Pipe leaks or seemingly minimal water damage can cause extensive issues and damage to your Kahuku rental. SERVPRO recommends homeowners walk through any vacation/long term rentals to check for possible water damage. Common places to check may include:

- Walls

- Bathrooms

- Under sinks

- Behind large appliances

- Hoses

- All faucets

If your rental has experienced any fungi/water damage call our SERVPRO team (808)-744-2730 today for an inspection.

Black Water Is Often a Threat To Health After Flood

What is this water and why should it be avoided?

After experiencing a flood in Waialua, HI dealing with any water damage from the flood should be priority. Before diving into the problem it is important to know about the associated dangers of black water.

Black Water

Black water is hazardous and is presumed to house multiple contaminants. It may contain:

  • Fecal matter
  • Urine
  • Used toilet paper

Sewage systems frequently become compromised and leak after water damage. Black water can pose health threats to those who encounter the dirty liquid.

Gray Water

Gray water often comes from washing machines, dishwashers, sinks and showers and is not as contaminated as black water. Though the water is not immediately as dangerous as black water, after 48 hours of contact with building surfaces, the water can become more hazardous.

How can you stay safe from contaminated water?

The best way to prevent any possible health hazards, limit your time exposed to the contaminated water. Instead of trying to handle the cleanup process yourself depend on our SERVPRO team to assess the damage and tackle the steps necessary for a thorough restoration of your home.

Black water is a likely contaminant after a flood and is a  primary reason you should not deal with the water damage on your own. Contacting a professional team to assist with damage from flooding gives you greater protection from possible risks and increases the likelihood of positive outcomes.

Water flooded the bottom of one of the theater rooms in the Kailua Cinemas movie theater due to a storm. The water came flooding in the emergency exit and filled the bottom of the theater with about and inch of water. As most theaters are, the bottom of the theater is at a lower level then than the rest of the room. Meaning the water didn't spread very far throughout the room. It collected in one area that just so happened to be concrete. The water did not set into the ground and our technicians were able to remove all water very easily. a few fans and dehumidifiers were placed around the bottom of the theater to prevent any further possible damages, and possible microbial growth. The theater owners were very pleased with the speed of the whole process and plan on using our services if the need ever arises in the future.

Who Knew Doing a Simple Chore Could Cause a Devastating House Fire

melted kitchen cabinets with heavy soot settled on counter tops The kitchen in this Kapolei home suffered traumatic loss due to a kitchen fire started in the oven.

Young Boy Turns on "Oven Clean" Button on Stove - Fire Grows to Devastate

Our SERVPRO team received a call to perform restoration services for this Kapolei home after a disastrous house fire. A young man had been given a few chores to complete before leaving home for football practice that evening. One of these chores being to clean the inside of the oven. He hit the "clean oven" button assuming it would get the job done. Little did he know his mother had stored kitchen utensils in the oven. These utensils caught fire, and soon spread to the rest of the kitchen and surrounding walls. After returning home from practice they found fire trucks and firemen had put out the fire in their home. Does Your Insurance Truly Cover All Storm Damage For Your Honolulu Properties?

9/11/2019 (Permalink)

Small stream of water coming from ceiling. Seemingly small leaks in your ceiling will lead to much larger damages that your insurance will not cover.

Make Sure You are Aware of What Coverage Your Insurance Provides

Flooding is common throughout the state of Hawaii. Our rainy season is November to March, taking up almost half a year. Flooding and storm damage is particularly common for local Honolulu homes and businesses. Many Hawaii residents, and business owners find themselves refusing to assess “minor damages” due to financial hardships, which proves to be counterproductive when seeking the most cost efficient way of keeping your home safe, and up-kept throughout the year. To ensure your property is receiving the best care as well as protecting your wallet if disaster strikes follow our SERVPRO recommended steps.

Check What Your Insurance Does NOT Cover With Flooding Damage

Most insurance companies do not cover flooding damage when the water runs into a home from outside. This means if any rushing or flooding water outside were to enter your home through a door, window, or crack the insurance may not cover the damages. Insurance companies do NOT cover water damage if the water enters over the threshold of your home, meaning if the water comes in through your front door damages will not be covered. Call and check with your insurance company to inquire what damages they will cover. In the case, your insurance will not cover these damages take comfort in knowing there are steps you can take to prevent your home from suffering from flood damages. Have your home prepared with sandbags, and a sump pump to prevent water from entering your home. Also, be sure to keep on maintenance in your home to prevent possible situations your insurance won’t cover.

Do NOT Overlook a “Small” Leak

Do not look past a small leak coming from your ceiling. Keep up the maintenance of your property throughout the year. Insurance companies will decline to pay for storm damages if your property has had ongoing issues you did not take care of that cause damage to your home or business.

Check with your property and contact your insurance company to make certain you are prepared and aware of what needs to be done if your property is in danger of flooding.

If you have been hit by a storm call SERVPRO at (808)744-2730. We specialize in restoration and reconstruction services for fire damage, mold, and storms. Call today for an inspection.

Preparing for a Storm: Part 2

MAKING A PLAN

Water

  • Make sure to store at least one gallon of water per person per day and store enough water to last two weeks. If you have enough water, you can live on half of your normal food intake.
  • You should store more water if you:
    • Live in a hot environment
    • Have children
    • Are nursing
    • Are ill
  • Rotate your water supply every six months
  • Other sources of water in your home: water heater, ice cubes, pipes and toilet tank (not the bowl)

Food

Food can be rationed. Store at least a three to five day supply of non-perishable food in a dry place that is 70 degrees or lower.

Select foods that require little or no preparation, water, or refrigeration. Select foods that are high in calories, nutritious, compact and lightweight. Choose foods your family will eat.

Pets

Pets are an important member of your family. Plan for them as well. Remember that emergency shelters typically do not allow animals. Only service animals are allowed in shelters.

But you should know safe places to keep your pets if you have to evacuate with them. Where are hotels and motels outside of your area that accept pets? What friends or family members could keep them for you? Which boarding facilities, veterinarians or shelters could be used?

Utilities

Your water heater can be a critical source of water in an emergency, but only if it’s still standing. Go to your home improvement store and buy metal straps to secure the water heater to nearby studs.

A falling water heater can break gas lines and water lines or spill your water.

Gas

If you have natural gas coming into your home, it’s easy to turn off. However, only qualified people should turn gas back on.

When you should shut off your gas meter if:

  • You smell natural gas
  • You hear gas leaking
  • There is a fire (unless shutting off the gas would jeopardize your safety)

If you need to shut off the gas, use a wrench to turn the valve a quarter turn in either direction. Take some time to become familiar with which utilities enter your home and where they can be shut off. As you practice emergency plans, locate and map the gas, water and electricity mains. During family drills, go through the movements, but do not practice shutting off gas lines.

What To Do Immediately If a Fire Starts

8/14/2019 (Permalink)

Fires can become unmanageable quickly.

If a fire starts, it is understandable to feel anxious. Here are some tips on what to do in case a fire breaks out in your home.

Learn how to safely operate a fire extinguisher

There are a multitude of ways in which you can learn how to operate a fire extinguisher. Talk to your local fire department or access their website for more information.

GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL 9-1-1

Do not stay inside when a fire is happening. If you cannot put it out safely by yourself, contact the authorities!

Yell “Fire!” loudly as you exit

Alerting others of the situation will improve their chances of getting out in time. This could save lives. Leave all your belongings and exit the area.

Go low

If your only exit route is contaminated with smoke, get low to the ground all the way to the exit. Always close doors behind you.

If smoke, heat or flame block your exit, stay in the room

Close the doors and place a wet rag under the door. Call the fire department and give them your exact location. Open a window, try to signal attention or flash a light to signal that you need help.

Follow your family emergency communication plan

Having a family emergency communication plan in place takes unnecessary stress out of stressful situations. Make sure you update your rendezvous spots often in order to avoid mix-ups. If you inhaled smoke, get the necessary medical attention and be sure to rest and assess how you are physically doing.

Fires are unpredictable, it is a good idea to not only have fire detection systems in place but also fire suppression systems. Our team can meet your needs here on Oah’u! We offer safety, maintenance and other services to keep you, your family and your home safe.

Three Steps You Must Take Before a Storm to Help Prevent Damage

8/6/2019 (Permalink)

Storm approaching
  • Fix any damaged parts of your roof

The roof of your property should get a check up every year, especially after major weather events such as hail storms, for signs of deterioration. Fix all of the broken, misplaced and cracked tiles; remove any dirt buildup, for those can block the drainage channels. If your roof sheeting is damaged, it may need to be replaced. Any beam of light shining through the roof may be a sign that your roof membrane is damaged. Keep in mind that working on a roof can be dangerous, be careful when inspecting the area or contact an expert roofer.

  • Make sure your insurance policy is adequate

Consider the type of coverage you will need. Make sure your insurance provides cover for weather events that are specific to your geographic location. These may include but are not limited to: flash flooding, storm runoff, landslide, and damage caused by falling trees or branches.

  • Listen and comply with information broadcast by your local radio station and weather warning systems

Local radio stations will always broadcast weather information specific to the area in which you reside. Listening to such channels will help you identify areas you should avoid due to flash flooding, road closures, recovery centers and evacuation pathways. In the case of a storm, make sure you are prepared to be without power and have battery operated lights and radios. Be compliant with the information provided in emergency preparedness packets and stay safe!

Storms can hit at any point, and cause varying amounts of trouble. If any  damage happens to your property, our team can meet your needs here on Oah’u! We offer safety, maintenance and other services to keep you, your family and your home safe.

7 Common Causes of Fire at Home

8/5/2019 (Permalink)

Cigarettes are one of the leading causes of fire at home.

To better prevent fires, it is important to know the leading causes for them so the proper measures can be taken! Get to know common household practices that can cause and propagate fires.

  • Smoking

According to the National Fire Prevention Association, the leading cause of fire deaths in the United States are cigarettes. A great majority of the fires starts with incandescent ashes or cigarette butts falling into upholstered surfaces. If you smoke, dispose of your ashes properly! Make sure the cigarette is completely out before tossing it into the garbage.

  • Children and Animals

If children or pets are left unattended in the same room as a lit candle, the risks of a fire increase greatly. Make sure to put out candles if you are not in the room with an unattended pet or child. Lighters and matches should similarly not be in close reach of any child.

  • Dryers

Lint is a great fire-starter. Keep your dryer clean and well-maintained to avoid sparks that could evolve into a fire. Clean your lint filter after each load to minimize risks.

  • Portable Space Heaters

Portable heaters account for a third of all house fires. Make sure flammable items are kept at least 4 feet away from the space heaters. Heaters should not be left unattended or on overnight.

  • Cooking

A lot of house fires happen as a result of using cooking oils, fryers and improper use of microwaves. Never leave a child unattended while cooking, especially if using cooking oil or higher temperatures. Always make sure your stovetop or oven is completely turned off before leaving the kitchen. Keep flames away from loose clothing, paper, and other fabrics

  • Flammable Liquids

Common sense as it may be, keep flammable cleaning agents, paints and adhesives away from heat sources of any kind. Keep them in a ventilated area that is cool.

  • Fireplaces

If you have a fireplace at your home, get it checked out yearly to ensure it is in proper working order. Do not go to sleep with your fireplace on and utilize a screen to prevent sparks from flying off the fire.

Three Things You Can Do Today to Avoid Storm Damage in Your Home

7/18/2019 (Permalink)

Storm
  • Make sure your yard and balcony are well-maintained!

If you secure and store items that could be blown around in a storm, they will not do damage to your house. Strong winds are able to pick up even the larger items of outdoor furniture and trampolines, which will cause great damage to property. Identify the items you may need to secure or store, and put them away as soon as you hear of strong wind or severe storm in a forecast. If you are on vacation, consider securing all of your items before you leave.

  • Make sure gutters, down pipes and drains, are cleaned regularly.

Keeping gutters and down pipes clear of blockages avoids the common problem of water overflowing under the eaves into the roof. Leaves need to be cleared from the valleys of the roof, or else they will make their way into the gutters during rainfall. Keep the drains in your property clear to help water from the surface move away and prevent it from pooling and spilling into your house. Be sure to remove any pots or plants that are being used to hide drainage grates if heavy rain is expected. Always park away from valleys and drains in this type of weather.

  • Make sure to trim trees and branches that have a risk of fall.

Have a qualified landscaper or arborist inspect trees around your property every two to three years to identify any preventative measures necessary. Check the roots of the trees for failure, beware of digging around the trees and be proactive if there is a problem.

In Oahu, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

7/1/2019 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business.

These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.

This Rental property had a slow leak in a drain line, when the plumber came to fix the leak, he opened up the drywall to access the pipe and found mold. The owner then contacted us to assess the damage. We found the mold had spread throughout the guest bathroom, living room, and master bathroom. We removed and abated all affected materials, and restored the property to preloss condition.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Oahu Residents: We Specialize in Flooded Bathroom Cleanup and Restoration!

6/12/2019 (Permalink)

Mold can spread to adjacent walls

A bathroom can flood at any time, although flooding most often occurs during heavy rainfall. Bathrooms are inherently prone to flooding because they have multiple water supply lines and water drainage pipes. There are a number of reasons why your basement could flood, including:

  • A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
  • Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
  • Storm sewer backup
  • Sanitary sewer backup
  • Foundation drainage failure
  • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure
  • And many more

In this particular case this bathroom’s water supply-line to the toilet had a small leak. The leak affected the wall behind the toilet and the sink. The leak was small enough that it went unnoticed for some time allowing the water to spread underneath the tile flooring. The water spread to the wall across from the toilet and sink, which was shared with the daughter’s back closet wall. The water also spread into the shared wall of the master bathroom. Since the water was not noticeable to the eye, mold was able to grow. The homeowner noticed some discoloration behind his toilet and gave us a call. Upon inspection we were able to track the water into the daughter’s closet and to their master bathroom. We performed mold remediation services which included removing affected drywall, removing the sink vanity, removing the tile flooring, and remediating the mold left on the wooden framework. After we finished the removal of all affected materials and cleaned up the areas, we called in a Hygienist to collect an air quality sample. The results came back showing a low spore count, thus passing the air quality standard which allowed the Homeowner began his remodel project on his two bathrooms.

Here is an Example of What We Did

A rental property in Kaneohe had a faulty water-supply line in the upstairs bathroom. The tenant was off island, so the leak was not detected until the tenant in the lower unit noticed discoloration on the ceiling. Upon inspection we found that the ceiling was saturated. We went upstairs and found that the flooring was beginning to cup and the lower wall drywall was saturated. We located the source in the bathroom. We began mitigation which included removing the ceramic tile in the bathroom, laminate flooring in the upstairs bedroom, and the lower 2 feet of drywall in the bedroom. We also had to remove the ceiling in the lower unit living room. We were successful at removing the affected materials and we were able to dry out the wood structure. We had our reconstruction team replace all removed materials. They reinstalled the ceiling, flooring, and sink vanity bringing a new life to the units affected.

Hoarding Is More Common Than You Think

Mold behind cabinets

Hidden mold found behind cabinets

This moldy wall was discovered after kitchen cabinets were removed. A leaky gasket on a dishwasher or a small crack in the ice maker line can slowly damage the walls or the floors of your home in hidden areas. It's these types of slow leaks that we see leading to mold damage quite regularly. Our technicians are trained to properly find all wet areas of your property, even the areas that are not yet visible, such as in wall cavities or behind cabinets. The faster we can get to the water damage the less likely the chances are that the water damage will turn into mold damage.

Don't let it happen to you

Leaky Pipes, Big Problems

Pipes are everywhere, in our homes, businesses, warehouses, shopping centers, schools etc. These vital parts of modern convince are critical for everyday life. However, if they malfunction, they can cause substantial water damage and unwanted interruption to your life or business. SERVPRO of Central Honolulu sees common factors in many of the floods that we mitigate. To lower your odds of suffering from a flood damage from these common factors follow these 3 helpful tips.

  1. Change out your water supply lines regularly. Supply lines from the toilet, washing machine, dish washer, refrigerator, etc. become brittle and leak or break completely allowing water damage in surrounding areas.
  2. Don’t ignore troublesome toilets, it could be a tell-tale sign of a bigger problem just waiting to happen. If your toilet isn’t working properly call your plumber now, it could save you from a sloshy, smelly, expensive mess.
  1. Consider shutting off your water supply if you are leaving town. Pipes that are not in use are still able to rupture and spill thousands of gallons of water into your property. Nobody wants to come home to a swimming pool in their living room.

If these unfortunate situations find their way into your world call on us. Mitigation professionals are here to help 24 hours a day.
